This is not a complete market-wide claim, and it does not use confirmed sold prices. It is a snapshot of public asking prices from matched listings.
The goal is simple: give Australian resellers a clearer starting point when deciding whether an item belongs on eBay, Depop, or both.

In this 260-pair pilot sample of matched Australian resale listings, eBay showed the higher category median asking price in 9 out of 12 categories.
That does not mean eBay always sells for more. It means that, in this sample, similar items were usually listed at higher median item prices on eBay than on Depop.
Methodology
This study used the Listalong eBay vs Depop Australia resale research workbook. The analysis focused on accepted rows from the workbook’s Matched Pairs sheet.
For each matched pair, the workbook includes:
- a resale category
- an eBay listing reference
- a Depop listing reference
- the eBay item asking price
- the Depop item asking price
- reviewer matching notes
- a match score
- an

Only rows marked as accepted were included in the article calculations. That produced 260 accepted matched pairs across 12 categories.
For older categories, the matched-pair sheet already contained item-price columns. For the newer pilot categories, some accepted rows stored the final price in the raw listing source-price fields instead of the matched-pair price columns, so those listing references were joined back to the Raw Listings sheet and converted to AUD using the workbook’s FX rates where required.
We compared item asking prices, not shipping-inclusive landed prices. Shipping can vary by listing, seller, parcel size and marketplace workflow, so this article keeps the headline comparison focused on the listed item price.
The matching process was designed to compare closely related listings rather than random unrelated items. The workbook includes matching signals such as brand/model, item type, size, condition, era/style and material/colour. Even so, resale items are rarely perfect duplicates. Treat this as a pilot study, not a final answer for the whole Australian resale market.
Important limitations:
- These are public asking prices, not confirmed sold prices.
- Asking prices can be negotiated, discounted or ignored by buyers.
- The sample is useful, but not market-wide.
- Categories were selected for resale relevance, not to represent every item type.

Category-by-category commentary
RM Williams boots
RM Williams boots had the largest dollar difference in this pilot study. The median eBay asking price was AU$293.76, compared with AU$180.00 on Depop.
That may reflect eBay’s strength for high-intent searches, established Australian brands and higher-ticket resale items. It does not prove the same boots sell for more on eBay, but it suggests sellers should be careful about underpricing premium boots when testing Depop.
Dr. Martens 1460 boots
Dr. Martens 1460 boots also leaned toward eBay in the sample. The median eBay asking price was AU$187.74, while the median Depop asking price was AU$120.00.
Boots are searchable by brand, model and size, which can suit eBay. Depop may still be useful for style-led buyers, but sellers should check comparable listings before assuming both platforms support the same asking price.
Zimmermann dresses
Zimmermann dresses showed a higher median asking price on eBay: AU$237.50 compared with AU$182.50 on Depop.
Designer dresses can vary widely by collection, fabric, condition and rarity, so this 12-pair category should be treated as a signal rather than a rule. Sellers should still research the exact style before choosing a price.
Akubra hats / western felt hats
Akubra and western felt hats were close compared with the boot categories. The median eBay asking price was AU$159.50, compared with AU$150.00 on Depop.
That narrow gap suggests sellers should pay attention to model, size, condition and photos. A clean hat listing could make sense on both marketplaces, but the category is too varied for a single broad conclusion.
Country Road women’s midi dresses
Country Road women’s midi dresses had a median asking price of AU$71.95 on eBay and AU$50.00 on Depop.
This category is fashion-focused enough to suit Depop, but the sample still showed higher median asking prices on eBay. For Australian sellers, the takeaway is not to ignore Depop, but to test it with pricing that matches the audience and condition.
Gorman dresses
Gorman dresses had a median eBay asking price of AU$71.60, compared with AU$60.00 on Depop.
Gorman styles can swing heavily by print, collaboration and size. The 12-pair sample suggests eBay may support stronger listed prices for some Gorman dresses, but style-specific research matters here.
Nike lightweight jackets
Nike lightweight jackets showed a median eBay asking price of AU$59.95 and a median Depop asking price of AU$46.94.
That gap is smaller than the boot categories but still notable. Nike can work in both search-led and style-led contexts, which makes it a good candidate for cross-listing.
Levi’s 501 jeans
Levi’s 501 jeans are one of the cleanest examples of an item that can belong on both platforms. In the accepted sample, the median eBay asking price was AU$49.95, compared with AU$38.73 on Depop.

Harley-Davidson graphic T-shirts
Harley-Davidson graphic T-shirts had the smallest eBay-higher dollar gap. The median eBay asking price was AU$35.92, while the median Depop asking price was AU$29.23.
This category is highly visual, which can suit Depop, but brand and search intent can also support eBay. The gap is modest enough that sellers may reasonably test both platforms.
Polo Ralph Lauren short-sleeve polos
Polo Ralph Lauren short-sleeve polos were one of three Depop-higher categories. The median Depop asking price was AU$39.81, compared with AU$31.28 on eBay.
That does not mean every polo should go to Depop first. It does suggest that some classic casual fashion items may carry stronger asking prices with Depop’s style-led audience.
Tommy Hilfiger men’s shirts
Tommy Hilfiger men’s shirts also leaned toward Depop in the matched sample. The median Depop asking price was AU$31.22, compared with AU$25.95 on eBay.
This is a useful reminder that lower-ticket branded clothing does not always follow the same pattern as higher-ticket boots or designer dresses.
Billabong boardshorts
Billabong boardshorts had the strongest Depop percentage advantage in the accepted sample. The median Depop asking price was AU$34.13, compared with AU$24.95 on eBay.
Boardshorts can be visual, seasonal and style-led, which may help explain why Depop listed higher in this sample. The result is a good example of why Australian sellers should test categories rather than assume one marketplace is always stronger.
Practical takeaways for Australian resellers
- Do not treat eBay and Depop as interchangeable. Similar items can be priced differently depending on buyer behaviour and listing style.
- Use eBay as a strong base for searchable inventory, especially established brands, boots, specific fits and higher-detail listings.
