The best tool for boosting eBay sales is not necessarily another monthly subscription.
It is the tool that fixes the part of the sale that is actually failing.
If a listing has hardly any impressions, a photo editor will not solve the main problem. If it gets views but no sale, paying for more traffic may only send more people to a price or postage offer they do not like. If it sells but leaves almost no profit, the useful tool is a calculator, not an ad campaign.
This guide is a deliberately native-first shortlist for Australian one-off resellers. The tools were selected for local availability, measurable usefulness and reasonable cost—not to build an exhaustive directory of seller software. Most are already inside eBay; a few help with postage, profit or reaching buyers beyond eBay.
If you do not yet know why your store is quiet, start with our 12 checks for slow eBay sales in Australia. If you already know where buyers are dropping away, use the table below.
Match the tool to the sales problem
| What you are seeing | Tool to try first | Access or cost | Metric to watch |
|---|---|---|---|
| Low or falling impressions | Seller Hub traffic, then Listing Quality Report if available | Seller Hub is free; report access is subscriber-limited | Impressions |
| Unsure whether the item has demand | Product Research or eBay’s Sold Items filter | Check account access; eBay’s current pages conflict | Sell-through, sold range and postage |
| Impressions but few views | eBay photo and listing tools | Included in eBay’s listing flow | Views and click-through behaviour |
| Watchers or cart activity but no order | Best Offer and Send offers | Available on eligible listings | Offers accepted and profit after discount |
| Old stock or low average order value | Discounts Manager | Pro Basic, Featured or Anchor | Units per order, conversion and margin |
| Competitive listing needs more exposure | Promoted Listings | Advertising fees apply; eligibility rules apply | Ad fees, attributed sales and return on ad spend |
| Repetitive changes across many listings | Seller Hub Reports and bulk tools | Pro plan required | Time saved and listing error rate |
| Postage is hurting the total price | eBay labels and a postage comparison | Label cost varies by parcel and service | Total buyer cost and postage margin |
| Sales look healthy but profit does not | Listalong reseller calculators | Free | Net profit, margin and return on cost |
| Good fashion stock has a narrow audience | Listalong eBay-to-Depop cross-listing | Currently free; no access code required | Overall sell-through across both marketplaces |
A hypothetical example shows why the diagnosis matters. A jacket with 900 impressions, nine views and no watchers probably needs a stronger first photo, title or total buyer price before advertising. Another with 70 views and eight watchers already has attention; price, postage or a sensible offer is the more useful next test.
1. Seller Hub: find the bottleneck before changing anything
Best for: every seller who has made at least one sale.
eBay Seller Hub is the best first tool because it tells you what is happening before you start guessing. eBay says Seller Hub itself is free and brings listings, orders, payments, seller level and performance information into one place.
Open the Performance tab and look at traffic, sales and selling costs. At listing level, page views and the Listing Traffic History report help show whether people are reaching the item. eBay says that report can go back as far as two years, while the visible count on a fixed-price listing older than 30 days is a rolling 30-day figure.
Read the numbers like this:
- Low impressions: check demand, category, title and item specifics.
- Impressions but few views: check the first photo, total price and postage.
- Views and watchers but no sale: check condition, trust, price and offers.
- Sales but weak profit: check fees, ads, packaging and postage costs.
Also check Seller level before paying for more traffic. Below Standard status can lower eligible listings in Best Match and block access to Promoted Listings. The eBay Seller Standards Australia guide explains the thresholds, fees and recovery steps.
The limitation is that traffic data tells you where the problem may be, not exactly why it happened. One sale after an edit does not prove the edit caused it. Use Seller Hub to form a sensible test, not to turn normal variation into an algorithm theory.
2. Product Research: check demand and real sold prices
Best for: deciding what to source, how to price it and whether similar stock actually sells.
Product Research is more useful than simply looking at the highest active asking price. eBay says it can show up to three years of sales data, actual accepted Best Offer prices, average and range of sold prices, postage, seller counts, sales format and sell-through for searches covering 90 days or less.
That makes it useful for questions such as:
- Did this brand sell regularly or only once?
- Does the sold price leave room for postage and an offer?
- Are buyers choosing pre-owned or new examples?
- Is demand local to Australia or mainly overseas?
There is an important access warning in 2026. eBay’s current Help Centre and Pro plan information say Product Research is for Pro sellers. Other live Australian Seller Centre pages still call it free to all sellers. Because eBay’s own pages are not aligned, check whether Research appears in your Seller Hub before building your workflow around it.
If it is not available, eBay’s Sold Items filter is still a useful free starting point. Whichever route you use, compare genuinely similar condition, size, model and completeness. A sold designer jacket with tags is not a fair comparison for a heavily worn one in a less popular size. Our second-hand clothing pricing guide shows the full sold-comparable method.
If you are comparing sold and active totals manually, use the eBay sell-through rate calculator. It needs only those two totals and keeps the market snapshot separate from your own inventory performance.
3. Listing Quality Report: find fixable gaps at scale
Best for: sellers with many Buy It Now listings who want a structured list of improvements.
The Listing Quality Report is a downloadable Excel report. eBay says it analyses the ten categories in which you have the most live listings, with category benchmarks, listing-level recommendations and reasons some items may have been rejected from Google Shopping.
This is more useful than a vague instruction to “optimise your listings” because it can point to specific gaps, such as recommended item specifics or shipping settings.
There are limits:
- eBay’s live page still describes it as available to Store subscribers, even though Australian Stores moved to the Pro naming in May 2026.
- It currently covers Buy It Now and single-SKU listings.
- A recommendation is a test, not an order. Free postage, for example, can damage margin if the item price does not absorb the cost.
Treat access as subscriber- and account-dependent. If the report appears in your Seller Hub, start with a small group of similar listings and measure the result before changing the entire store.
Fashion sellers also have a separate deadline to deal with: from 8 September 2026, eBay’s Australian policy requires apparel and footwear listings to use supported size and condition values. Use our September clothing listing requirements checklist before treating optional optimisation tools as the priority.
4. eBay’s photo tools: earn the click without hiding the item
Best for: listings receiving impressions but not enough views.
You may not need a separate photo subscription. eBay’s listing flow and app include cropping, image adjustments and background-removal tools. The app also offers generated background options. eBay currently allows up to 24 photos per listing, with a policy minimum of 500 pixels on the longest side and a recommendation around 1600 pixels.
The useful order is simple:
- Choose a clear first photo that shows the whole item.
- Correct exposure and crop away empty clutter.
- Use a clean background if the original setting distracts from the product.
- Keep real close-ups of labels, wear, measurements and flaws.
Do not edit away evidence a buyer needs. For used goods, honest condition photos matter more than making every image look like a catalogue shot. eBay also prohibits added text, borders and watermarks, so avoid turning the gallery image into an advert.
The metric to watch is not “did the picture look nicer?” It is whether views improve relative to impressions, followed by whether those extra views convert.
5. Best Offer and Send offers: work with existing interest
Best for: fixed-price items attracting watchers, cart activity or buyer questions.
The cheapest lead is often the buyer who has already shown interest. Best Offer and Send offers let you negotiate without permanently cutting the public price.
Best Offer can include optional auto-accept and auto-decline amounts. Seller-initiated offers can go to eligible interested buyers, including some watchers and cart users. Eligibility depends on factors such as listing format, age and buyer offer limits, so not every item will show the option.
Before sending anything, decide your floor:
Sale price - postage - packaging - item cost - advertising - other fees = money left before your time
That prevents a quick sale from becoming an accidental loss. Avoid sending the same automatic percentage across an entire store. A 10% reduction may be harmless on a high-margin jacket and painful on a bulky, low-margin item.
Use offers when the item already has interest. They are not a substitute for fixing a listing that nobody is finding.
6. Discounts Manager: useful for baskets, not one-off markdown theatre
Best for: established stores with complementary items, repeatable stock or aged inventory.
Discounts Manager supports order discounts, coupons, sales events and volume pricing. In Australia it is currently limited to Pro Basic, Featured and Anchor sellers.
This is most useful when the promotion has a job:
- encourage a buyer to add a second item
- clear a defined group of stale stock
- reward returning customers with a coupon
- offer quantity pricing on repeatable inventory
It is less useful when every item is permanently “on sale” with no margin plan. One-off clothing sellers should also be careful with volume discounts: the tool is designed to reward buying more, but you may only own one of each piece.
Track average order value, units per order, total discount and postage saved by combining parcels. Revenue can rise while profit falls, so the sales graph is only half the answer.
7. Promoted Listings: pay for reach only after the listing is ready
Best for: competitive listings with good demand, strong photos, complete details and enough margin for advertising.
eBay Promoted Listings has two main campaign strategies:
- General: the current ad-rate range is 2%–100%. The percentage applies to the total sale amount, including postage and taxes, and can be charged when the item sells within 30 days after any buyer clicked its General ad.
- Priority: cost per click. Every valid click can cost money whether or not it produces a sale.
Eligibility rules apply, including seller performance and account activity. Neither strategy guarantees extra sales.
The safest first test is a small set of listings that already convert reasonably well. Record the normal impressions, views, sales and margin. Run one campaign, then compare ad fees, attributed sales and return on ad spend. Do not start by promoting every weak item in the store.
Also be careful interpreting attribution. An attributed sale means it met eBay’s ad rules; it does not prove the buyer would never have purchased without the ad. If clicks rise but orders do not, stop buying more traffic and return to the price, photos, condition or postage offer.
8. Seller Hub Reports and bulk tools: remove repetitive work
Best for: larger catalogues where manual listing maintenance is becoming the bottleneck.
Since May 2026, eBay says bulk listing tools require a Pro plan. Seller Hub Reports can use CSV or spreadsheet files to add, revise, relist or end inventory and provide downloadable order information. The bulk editor can also handle large groups of listings inside Seller Hub.
This does not directly improve ranking. Its value is consistency and time:
- update a shared postage or handling setting
- correct missing fields across a category
- revise a group of stale listings
- export orders for fulfilment or analysis
For a seller with 20 one-off items, a spreadsheet upload may create more work than it saves. For a store with hundreds or thousands of listings, correcting the same field one item at a time is expensive.
Remember that eBay now reserves API and third-party integrations for Pro Basic or above. Check our free selling and Pro overview before choosing software that relies on an eBay connection.
9. Postage comparison: keep the buyer’s total competitive
Best for: listings where postage makes the checkout total look uncompetitive.
Postage can lose the sale before fulfilment begins. Compare the item price plus delivery—not only the shipping line—against similar listings. Then check the actual cost instead of guessing from an old satchel price.
Buying postage labels on eBay can simplify the workflow because tracking is added to the order automatically. eBay also offers printerless QR codes for eligible domestic labels and advertises discounted Australia Post rates. Free-selling sellers generally need an eBay label for eligible orders, while defined exceptions and expanded Pro postage options apply.
The eBay postage guide for Australian sellers explains which domestic orders require an eBay label, the published exceptions, QR labels and combined orders.
The eBay quote is not automatically the cheapest for every parcel. A seller with a stronger MyPost Business savings band may see a better rate elsewhere, while eBay can be simpler for lower volume. The Listalong postage comparison tool puts common eBay label, Australia Post and MyPost Business options beside each other. Australia Post changed parcel pricing on 1 July 2026, so use current quotes.
10. Profit calculators: make sure extra sales are worth having
Best for: checking whether a price, discount or postage promise still leaves worthwhile profit.
A sales tool should not only help an item move. It should help you keep enough of the sale. The free Listalong Reseller Toolkit includes:
- the reseller ROI calculator for profit, margin and return on cost
- the eBay and Depop fee calculator for estimated seller proceeds
- the postage comparison tool for common Australian services
These calculators do not improve search position. They prevent a different mistake: mistaking turnover for profit. Before promoting, sending a 15% offer or including postage in the item price, calculate what remains.
11. Listalong cross-listing: test a second audience for suitable fashion
Best for: Australian sellers with active eBay.com.au fashion listings that may also suit Depop.
Listalong is our own product, so this is not an independent recommendation. It does not improve eBay ranking, repair an eBay listing or create more eBay impressions.
It fits the next situation: the eBay listing is healthy, but a good piece of fashion may suit another audience. Listalong reuses available details from selected active eBay.com.au listings as a starting point for a Depop version that you review before publishing.
Once the two one-off listings are linked, sold-item handling is designed to end the match when the item sells on either marketplace. That reduces risk but cannot rule out near-simultaneous purchases.
Its scope is narrow: listing creation runs from eBay to Depop, it is aimed at suitable one-off stock rather than replenishable quantities, and the Depop connection uses a Chrome extension that may occasionally need reconnecting. If you need several marketplaces, use our cross-listing tools comparison for Australian sellers instead.
A sensible tool stack at each stage
For a beginner with 20 or 30 listings, keep the setup small:
- Seller Hub for traffic, sales and account health.
- eBay’s Sold Items filter for a first pricing range.
- eBay’s own photo tools for crop and background clean-up.
- Best Offer and Send offers when genuine interest appears.
- A simple spreadsheet and profit check for item cost, listing date and storage location.
An established clothing seller with 300 listings has different bottlenecks. Product Research, bulk tools, listing reports, structured discounts and selective cross-listing can save enough time to justify a more advanced setup.
A paid tool is worth considering when the problem happens repeatedly, the feature works on your Australian account, the result can be measured, and the likely time or margin saved exceeds the cost. Use the smallest tool that matches that problem.
A practical 14-day eBay sales test
Changing five things at once feels productive, but it leaves you with no idea which change mattered.
Choose 10 to 20 comparable listings and record a baseline before editing them. A simple tracker can look like this:
| Field | What to record | Hypothetical example |
|---|---|---|
| Listing | Item title or SKU | Vintage wool jacket, J104 |
| Starting position | Price, postage, impressions, views, watchers and offers | $65 + $12 postage; 900 impressions; 9 views; 0 watchers |
| Suspected bottleneck | Visibility, click, conversion, margin or audience | Click |
| One change | First photo, key item specific, price, offer or ad test | Replace the first photo only |
| Change date | The day the test began | 21 July 2026 |
| Day 7 result | Updated impressions, views, watchers, offers, sales and ad cost | Pending |
| Day 14 result | Same figures plus actual profit if sold | Pending |
| Decision | Keep, reverse or run a cleaner follow-up test | Decide after the results |
Try to change one meaningful factor. Use comparable untreated listings as a rough reference where possible. Avoid declaring victory because one item sold the next morning; buyers, payday, weather, seasonality and chance all move sales around.
For slow or seasonal stock, 14 days may still be too short. The point is not to manufacture a dramatic case study. It is to replace random tinkering with a repeatable decision.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best free eBay seller tool in Australia?
Seller Hub is the best place to start because it brings listings, orders, traffic, sales, costs and seller performance together. eBay says it is free, although you need to have made at least one sale to use it.
Is eBay Product Research free in Australia?
eBay’s current Australian pages conflict: the Help Centre and Pro plan information say it requires Pro, while other live Seller Centre pages call it free. Check whether the Research tab appears in your account.
Do Promoted Listings guarantee more eBay sales?
No. They can increase visibility, but eBay does not promise a sale. General and Priority campaigns also charge differently, so understand the fee model and measure profit rather than attributed revenue alone.
Do beginners need paid eBay seller software?
Usually not. Seller Hub, sold listings, eBay’s photo tools and a simple spreadsheet are enough to learn where your first problems are. Pay only when a repeated bottleneck becomes clear.
Can Listalong improve my eBay ranking?
No. Listalong is not an eBay SEO or advertising tool. It helps Australian sellers prepare selected eBay.com.au listings for Depop so suitable one-off fashion can be tested with a second audience.
Method and disclosure
This guide was checked against current official eBay Australia and Australia Post documentation on 21 July 2026. Listalong is our product, and the reseller calculators linked above are ours. No outside tool paid for placement.
Features, access rules and prices can change. Where eBay’s own pages conflict, this article says so rather than choosing the more convenient version. The recommendations are based on what each tool is designed to do; they are not promises of higher ranking or sales.
