Writing guide

How to write a good Depop description

A useful Depop description does two jobs. It helps the right buyer find the listing, then gives them enough confidence to buy without sending three basic questions first.

Depop says relevance has the biggest effect on search ranking. Its search can match a query against the description, brand, category, colour and other listing information. That is a reason to be specific, not a reason to stuff the description with every fashionable word you can think of.

1. Open with the item a buyer is looking for

Start with the strongest confirmed facts: colour, brand and item type. Add one or two genuine details that distinguish it.

Too vague

Nice shirt, good condition, message me with questions.

Useful opening

Grey Harley-Davidson cotton button-up shirt with long sleeves, a chest pocket and embroidered logo.

The second version sounds normal, but it also gives search and the buyer much more to work with. It does not need a string of synonyms such as “shirt top blouse tee overshirt”.

2. Add the tagged size, measurements and a careful fit note

A size label is evidence. “Fits oversized” is an opinion unless you explain what you compared it with. Use both carefully:

Tagged size 3XL with a relaxed fit. Pit to pit 68 cm; length 82 cm, measured flat. Please compare these measurements with a shirt you already own.

Australian sellers will usually lead with centimetres. Adding inches can help if you regularly sell overseas, but do not convert so roughly that the second number becomes misleading.

3. Describe condition like the buyer cannot inspect it

“Good used condition” is a starting point, not a complete condition note. Check high-friction areas: underarms, cuffs, collar, hems, fasteners, soles and the inside of bags. Mention fading, pilling, cracking, repairs, missing parts and smells when relevant.

Depop recommends showing faults in the photos as well as describing them. A clear flaw note protects trust; hiding the problem in the final photo or saying “photos form part of the description” does not make an unclear listing useful.

Minor wear

Light wash fade and gentle pilling under the arms. No holes or stains noticed.

Visible flaw

Small 4 mm mark near the left cuff, shown in photo 6. Price reflects this.

Shoes

Creasing across both toes and moderate heel wear. Soles remain firmly attached.

4. Complete the Depop fields instead of hiding facts in prose

The description is only one part of the listing. Select the correct category, brand, colour, style, condition and size in Depop's own fields. Buyers use filters, and Depop says complete item information helps it match listings with searches.

Do not write “black” in the description while choosing brown in the colour field, or select a popular brand when the item is unbranded. Conflicting information makes the listing harder to trust and harder to match correctly.

5. Finish with only useful shipping and hashtag details

A short tracked-postage or bundle note can answer a real question. Store rules, long disclaimers and personal contact information do not belong in every item description.

Depop's listing instructions currently allow up to five hashtags and up to two brand hashtags. Five relevant tags are more useful than five popular but unrelated tags. Depop explicitly warns that irrelevant wording, including a different brand, can harm listing exposure.

Reuse the facts, not the marketplace clutter

An existing eBay listing may already contain the photos, brand, size, material, measurements and flaw notes you need. Keep those facts. Remove eBay-only postage wording, promotional text and item-specific labels that read awkwardly in a Depop description.

Then check the physical item once more. Copying an old oversight into a second marketplace does not make it accurate.

FAQ

Depop description questions

What should I include in a Depop description?

Include the item type, accurate brand, colour, tagged size, fit notes, material, measurements, condition, every known flaw and useful shipping information. Complete Depop’s separate category, brand, colour and style fields as well.

How long should a Depop description be?

There is no ideal word count. Depop recommends a clear, accurate description without unnecessary information. A short item can need only a few lines, while an unusual or flawed item may need more detail.

Do keywords in Depop descriptions help search?

Yes, when they accurately describe the item. Depop says relevance to a buyer’s search has the biggest impact on search ranking and can use the description, brand, category and colour. Irrelevant brands or excess unrelated wording can harm exposure.

How many hashtags can I use on Depop?

Depop’s listing instructions say sellers can add up to five hashtags and up to two brand hashtags. Use only hashtags that genuinely describe the item rather than unrelated trending terms.

Should I put measurements in a Depop description?

Yes, particularly for second-hand clothing. Depop recommends measurements and fit notes because labelled sizing varies between brands. Australian sellers can list centimetres and add inches when serving overseas buyers.

Does this Depop description builder use AI or save my listing?

No. It arranges the details you enter into a practical template in your browser. Listalong does not save or send the information entered into this tool.
